Running an HVAC service company is expensive.
Every time a technician is sent to a home, the company absorbs the cost of the truck, fuel, insurance, equipment, dispatching, scheduling, training, payroll, travel time, and the possibility that the technician may spend an hour or more driving to a repair that takes only a few minutes to complete.
Those costs are real, and they are a major reason why even relatively simple HVAC repairs can become expensive for homeowners.
The challenge is especially significant with lower-cost repairs. When a company sends a fully stocked service vehicle and a trained technician across town to replace an inexpensive part, the price charged to the homeowner often reflects the cost of delivering the technician more than the cost or complexity of the repair itself.
That does not mean HVAC companies are doing something wrong. It means the traditional service model is not always the most efficient way to solve every problem.
At AC Factory, we believe homeowners should have another option.
Some Common HVAC Repairs Are Relatively Simple
Air conditioning systems are complex, and there are many repairs that should only be performed by trained professionals. Refrigerant work, electrical troubleshooting, compressor problems, airflow design, system installation, and major equipment failures require proper tools, training, and experience.
However, some of the most common air conditioning problems are far more straightforward.
Clogged drain lines, failed capacitors, and failed contactors account for a meaningful number of service calls. In many cases, these issues can be safely diagnosed and repaired by a capable homeowner with the right instructions, the correct replacement part, and proper safety precautions.
We are not suggesting that every homeowner should work on their own air conditioning system. Some people do not have the time, tools, confidence, or interest, and we completely understand that. We are happy to send a technician and handle the repair from start to finish.
But for homeowners who are comfortable performing basic repairs, we want to provide the support necessary to help them do it correctly and safely.
Eliminating Unnecessary Truck Rolls
Our goal is not to eliminate professional HVAC service. Our goal is to eliminate unnecessary truck rolls when there is a faster, simpler, and more affordable solution available.
A truck roll is often the most expensive part of a minor repair.
For example, the replacement part itself may be relatively inexpensive, while the cost of sending a technician to the home can be several times greater. That difference is not necessarily unreasonable when considering the company’s operating costs, but it may not represent the best value for the homeowner.
At AC Factory, we define value very simply:
The correct repair, completed safely, for the lowest reasonable total cost.
Sometimes that means sending one of our technicians. Other times, it may mean helping the homeowner repair the system themselves.
Remote HVAC Support for Homeowners
We are building tools and services designed to help homeowners diagnose and complete simple HVAC repairs without waiting for a technician to arrive.
For $25, homeowners can schedule a video support call with our team. During the call, we can help inspect the system remotely, discuss the symptoms, identify likely causes, explain safety precautions, and guide the homeowner through an appropriate repair when it is safe to do so.
This may include support with issues such as:
- Clearing a clogged condensate drain line
- Identifying and replacing a failed capacitor
- Identifying and replacing a failed contactor
- Checking thermostat settings and basic wiring
- Inspecting filters, disconnects, breakers, and visible system components
- Determining whether the problem requires an in-person technician
There will always be situations where remote support is not enough. When that happens, we will say so.
We would rather tell a homeowner that a repair requires professional service than encourage someone to attempt something beyond their ability or comfort level.
Safety Comes First
Air conditioning equipment contains high-voltage electrical components, moving parts, pressurized refrigerant, and components that can remain energized even when the system is not actively running.
Homeowners should never attempt a repair unless they understand how to safely disconnect power, verify that the equipment is de-energized, and follow the instructions provided for the specific system.
If there is any uncertainty, nervousness, or hesitation, stop and contact a professional.
Our remote support service is designed to help homeowners make informed decisions, not pressure them into performing repairs themselves.
Giving Homeowners More Control
The traditional HVAC service model generally gives homeowners two options: pay for a technician to come out or continue living without working air conditioning.
We believe there should be a third option.
Homeowners should be able to access professional guidance, understand what is wrong with their system, purchase the correct part, and complete an appropriate repair themselves when the situation allows it.
Technology makes this possible. Video calls, remote diagnostics, better educational tools, system data, and improved access to replacement parts can dramatically reduce the cost of many repairs.
We are continuing to build these tools because we believe the HVAC industry should become more transparent, more accessible, and more focused on the homeowner’s outcome.
Professional Service Is Still an Important Part of the Equation
There will always be homeowners who prefer to have a technician handle everything. There will also be many repairs that cannot or should not be performed by the homeowner.
We are here for those customers too.
Our technicians can diagnose complicated failures, perform major electrical and mechanical repairs, handle refrigerant work, replace equipment, and address problems that require professional training.
This is not about choosing between homeowners and technicians. It is about using the right solution for the right repair.
A simple problem should have a simple solution. A complex problem deserves an experienced professional.
Our Long-Term Goal
Our goal at AC Factory is to provide the most affordable air conditioning solutions possible while delivering the highest value to homeowners.
That means continuing to improve our service operation. It also means questioning whether a traditional service call is always the best answer.
We are building a model where homeowners can receive professional support in whatever form makes the most sense:
- Clear repair information
- Remote video assistance
- Access to the correct parts
- Affordable in-person service
- Full system replacement when necessary
We want homeowners to spend less, understand more, and feel confident that the solution they received was appropriate for the problem.
If a $25 video call and an inexpensive part can get an air conditioner running again safely, we believe that option should exist.
And if the repair requires a trained technician, we will be ready to help with that too.
At AC Factory, the goal is not to sell the most expensive service call.
The goal is to get the air conditioning working again in the safest, smartest, and most affordable way possible.
